Be informed of your states requirements

Pin It  If you are just getting started on your home schooling journey, the internet is a great resource for information. It may be "Wonderland", but it is your responsibility as a parent to know what you are legally bound to do and teach for your child if you choose to homeschool in your state.

Every state is different.  A great website to start at if you are just getting started is:  http://www.hslda.org/  This is the home school legal defense association. On their home page, on the right is a link called "in your state". You can click this link to find your state and learn the legal homeschooling options and requirements for the state you live.

TIP:  Some states require a good deal of documentation, others....not so much. If you are homeschooling a child with special needs I recommend doing more than the minimum amount required. This need not be cumbersome but can include attendance record, copies of outside evaluations done or therapies performed (speech, OT, PT, etc). I like to do a yearly portfolio that also includes descriptions/photos of field trips, family vacations and community experiences. Besides being a great memento of your child's homeschool year they are very helpful if your child transfers back into a public/private school if/when your homeschool journey ends!

Welcome

Pin It Welcome. I am glad you are here.

We are a Catholic homeschooling family to four children: 2 girls: one preschool and one kindergartener, and two special needs 4th graders (twin boys/birth trauma/MR.) I have been homeschooling for almost 2 years, and have been a credentialed pediatric speech-language pathologist for 15 years.

My homeschool curriculum: eclectic. (Catholic Heritage and Core Knowledge for the girls and Catholic Heritage and Life Skills Portfolios for the boys). I do alot of literature based units. I like  to supplement text work with computer work and real life experiences.
My methods:  vary.  (With 4 children under the age of 9 and one on the way, I have learned to be flexible).
My goal:  to provide my kids a safe and creative way to learn that adjusts to their unique learning styles and abilities.
My goal of this blog: to offer encouragement, information and inspiration to other homeschooling families, especially those homeschooling or considering homeschooling a child with special needs.  This is our journey.
