The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week...I was busy interviewing new providers for the boys (who have special needs) and happy to be writing that we were blessed to find a completely wonderful girl  for the position who used to be an au pair and reminds me very much of Giselle from Enchanted. The kids are super excited for her to start. We have also been selling girl scout cookies like crazy.

In our homeschool this week... we wrapped up both a math and social studies unit. I bought
"The Well Trained Mind" after reading Sue's review at the homeschool chic and think I will be implementing it into our curriculum for the girls this coming fall. Also, the boys got a new SLP and she starts in a few weeks. All the pieces for their program are now in place. How exciting!

Places we're going and people we're seeing...seeing alot of the ice rink in the mornings with all 4 older kids taking lessons now in addition to the girl's group lesson. Thankful there is a wonderful coach there with 12 years special olympics experience that can teach the boys. Also, still loving our days at the stables. Come take a ride with us here.

My favorite thing this week was...finally got everything for my book clubs into motion this week and email inquiries sent out! Beginning in May, I will be moderating a Jane Austen bookclub and a "Raising Daughters" bookclub; both meeting once a month.  How wonderful to meet with interesting and accomplished  women and discuss books and ideas and not events or gossip. Love it that there is interest. As women, we are all so busy and it is so important to take time for ourselves and surround ourselves with good company.

What's working/not working for us...tax season is challenging. My DH is a CPA so I inherit the running of the kids to their various activities in addition to all the schooling. But only 6 more weeks then I can be at home more while my husband takes over the taxiing. The days we are home all day are the days our homeschool runs more smoothly,  so these days where we have to leave for part of the day each day is so challenging.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have... over and over again I find that my homeschooled children are far more well behaved and respectful of others' things and property than the children they are around. I'm not saying this is the norm. But lately for us, it sure has been.  It's incredulous, really...

A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

like mother, like daughter...

Blessings to you,

Katie

  2. Whenever we have to leave the house is messes with our entire rhythm and routine for the day.

I would love some more info on the Raising Daughters book club you are doing. Just this week I was contemplating starting a mother/daughter bible study or girls club. Something to connect more deeply with my 10 year old and help her as she develops deeper friendships with other girls.

  3. @ living free. we are doing the raising a daughter book by jeanne and don elium. great book. we will meet once a month and daughters are invited to be there as well. one of my goals for 2011 was to start this group, since so much of my time/parenting reading is for things for the boys who have special needs. send me your email and i can send you a copy of hte flyer i sent out telling about the group and how it would run. i highly recommend doing a bookclub this year. this one will be more social; no officers or bylaws but my hope is everyone will leave it having learned alot and developed deeper friendships. thanks fo rstopping by!
