I am just going to put it out there. When my kids go to a party, I hate them coming home with a bag of plastic crap...or a ton of candy. It is a waste of money. I hate it. Every Mom I know hates it, but at some time or another we all do it. (WHY???????)Last year, I had an epiphany. I would send home a real favor or none at all. For the Alice in Wonderland party my daughter had (for a post and pictures of that party, click here) I wanted something that went along with the theme that the guests could enjoy long after the party was over...coloring books.
I was able to buy them on ebay from a seller who had 16 (two different designs). I paid $2 a piece for them and $5 shipping. The last time I did party bags, I spent over $2 per person and this favor will last, not corrode thier teeth and is better for the environment. To make is special, we wrapped them in a light blue gingham paper and put a ribbon bow on the top of each. Each party guest felt they were leaving with a special gift.
Now, since I am a softy and kids love candy, I did do a candy bar favor to go along with the coloring book...with a twist...this one also doubled as decoration. Each child found one of these sitting on their plate when they sat down for pizza. A festive Hershey bar.
Again, utilizing an ebay search for "candy bar wrappers" I found a seller who made wrappers to the theme, personalized them and shipped them to me. All I had to do was adhere them to the candy bars and voila!). Here was the before...
| On the front they say "Audrey's 7th birthday party" and on the back they say "Thanks for coming to my party" |
Some other great ideas for more parent pleasing, functional favors are (and my experience is the kids love these cause they feel they leave with a "real present":
- A cardstock card with a thank you for coming message and a nice pencil or pen adhered to the top (think a pen that is scented or a pencil that has been fancied up with feathers to be made to look like a "plume".--perfect for a French themed soire or a Fancy Nancy party!)
- A little golden book of the party theme (if you did a book themed party). Most barnes and nobles sell them for the $3-4 range; you can usually find groups of them available cheaper than that on ebay.
- A gift certificate for a free sundae or shake if it is a summer birthday. One of my favorite received was when our kids went to a movie themed party and as favors received a free dvd rental coupon and a bag of microwave popcorn!
- handmade hair barrettes (see tutorial here)
- gloves (if it is a winter party or an ice skate party)
- a craft they make and then take home (Michaels and Joann's have a ton to choose from all $1-$3 a piece) and kids love to craft...paint a small flowerpot, decorate a picture frame...so many to choose from!
Are you for or against party favors? What is the most creative favor you have given at a party? Please share it with us in the comments below! (and remember I am unable to read or reply to comments for another week but will reply to them all when I am back!)
Blessings,

Colouring books! Now why didn't I think of that!!
ReplyDeleteWe've just had both our daughter's birthday parties. The eldest sewed little favour bags to give to her friends (although I admit we still put junk and sweets in them), then I was a little wiser for the next party, and I helped my younger daughter make up a batch of peppermint creams, which we then tied up in a little packet and then tied a blown up balloon and a thank-you card to it. The kids loved them!
I'm going to get my thinking cap on again for next year - I'm definitely over the little plastic toys that are in most party bags - and they certainly get more than enough sweet food at the party itself!!
When I was a kid, I remember that the party bag was to take home a piece of birthday cake in - and that's all!1
Great post!

Hi Jill, The funny thing about the coloring books...the kids and parents loved them. It was as if all the moms had an "a-ha!" moment that there are better choices than plastic money wasters! We wrapped them to match the party and they looked super cute near the cake table! Love the idea about the peppermint creams. planning parties for our little ones is so fun, isn't it? Blessings! katie

My daughter's 3rd birthday is this month, and she wants a Scooby Doo party. For favors, I'm making dog-bone shaped cookies and putting them in a paw-print cello bag, set inside a $1 dog bowl. I did get little Scooby Doo rings, which I'll tie at the top of the cello bags. I may also include a Scooby Doo book for each guest - I haven't decided yet. Thanks for this post! It definitely helped influence my decision. I thought about it every time I saw the cheap favor aisle in the party store!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog via happy homemaker UK via Maria Killam design. I have just started blogging and would love any helpful tips. I'm trying to blog about organizing and simple design which I love. Anyway, my tip for the Birthday party favors was to get $5 gift cards to Jamba Juice. It was a real hit (I know $5 is a lot but if you're not buying a lot of favors it was OK). Thanks for your beautiful blog! I'll be back. Jennifer
ReplyDeleteFor My Little Man's first birthday party we didn't have any favors, most of the guests were adults so they wouldn't have wanted them anyways :) I don't remember ever receiving a favor at any birthday parties that I went to and I grew up in the 90s. I never really understood the idea of favors. What's the point? I threw a bridal shower for my sister and made favors which I forgot to hand out and nobody even seemed to notice. I don't know what I'll do when Little Man is older and has friend's parties, but if I do do favors I would do something more meaningful than a bag of little toys.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to mention, I would love it if you would link up this or any of your posts to my linky party! http://domesticrandomness.blogspot.com/2013/01/friday-fascinations-8-everything-linky.html
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on hating the little plastic doodads. I like to do costume items as favors. Crowns, fairy wings, princess hats, Robin Hood hats, mermaid skirts, ruby slippers made out of felt, Alice headbands, aprons, etc. Knowing how to sew, I can DIY most things inexpensively. Plus you get the bonus of cute costumed group pictures. :)
