HMJ: Be Authentic

In my life this week… Ordered 10 new baby chicks for our backyard flock. They arrive Oct. 11th and I can't wait! To meet our flock, click here.

In our homeschool this week… We finished our theme unit on Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, and celebrated by making heart in hand sugar cookies.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… don't compare yourself to other homeschoolers. Every family's needs, resources and situation are different.

I am inspired bypeople who are authentic.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeingMr. Darcy took me out last weekend for my birthday dinner date. I  managed to stay up till 11pm. The food was amazing and the view was spectacular. During and after dinner, we had panoramic views of both Camelback Mountain and Praying Monk.

My favorite thing this week was my 7 yr old daughter telling me she loved me "all the way to Jesus' heart".

What’s working/not working for usTheme units are working. The kids love them; I am able to tie them to all subjects and it has been a great way to have different ages/grades work cooperatively together.

Questions/thoughts I haveIs anyone else bothered when they hit a blog, any kind of blog, where the author presents themselves as an expert on the topic, but they've only been doing "their thing" for a year or less? Really, one year, and you are an expert? Somehow, I doubt that...

Things I’m working on working on plans for the girl scout troop investiture and rededication ceremony that is in three weeks, and a birthday party for one of my daughters that is coming up in four (a Pink Hello Kitty Tea Pary Birthday Party); and we've been doing alot of fall work outside--power washed the house, got fall decorations up and getting the garden prepped for our fall  garden growing season.

I’m reading just started Northhangar Abbey by Jane Austen

I’m grateful for a family who is supportive and an extended family who is supportive.
I’m praying for… a long and temperate fall.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

She loves me all the way to Jesus' heart. Wow.

  3. I love visiting your site! Funny that you mentioned "being an expert". I almost ditched my entire blog because I don't feel "qualified" to share homeschooling tips. I've barely been homeschooling for 2 years and often I see others that have a rich amount of information, mine looks pale indeed. But I figured as long as I write from the heart, all is well :)

  4. Carrie, you are so sweet and I love that you visit Brighton Park. I am glad you did not ditch your blog; blogging your "journey" into something--that be cathartic. I was referring to blogs that say on one had they are new and blogging their journey but then on the other hand imply they are an expert in the topic. I ran across a site the other day (not a homeschool site) that was so pretentious but the fine print showed the woman had never done her blog topic before until that year, but she was an expert! In her own mind I suppose! I enjoy all homeschool blogs except for the ones where it is a "homeschool" blog but the homeschoolers are 3 and under. Back in my day we called that mothering, not homeschooling. Homeschool blogs with good information come from years of experience and you will get there. (and some people just have more time to put into their blog). I was a speech pathologist for 17 years and raising 2 children with special needs so i have alot of information on theme units, modifying curriculum and teaching methods. I don't compare my blog or homeschooling journey to others and i dont want anyone comparing theirs to mine; we are all on different journeys and each journey in its own way is wonderful:-)

  5. I truly enjoyed your blog today. I have a question do your turkeys share the coop with your chickens, and if they do does that work out okay? I'm jealous of your upcoming baby chicks.

  6. Mandy and Dawn, thank you! her words made me week. We love England and everytime I am there I think "I am home" so my blog is my little piece of England, stateside.

Vanessa, the turkeys, ducks adn chickens all live together, free-reanging on 1/4 acre of our yard taht we fenced off for them. They get along wonderfully; the only problem is the white turkey wants to eat everyone's food. The chickens sleep in their coop; the turkeys roost in the pine trees at night.

  8. Great post! I love your advice, it is so easy to want our school to look like everyone else's or our children to know what every other child knows, but that is not the way rasising children flows.

  12. Zosia, thank you for stopping by.

Debbie, there is so much competition between mothers, homeschooling, public and private, but the simple fact is our kids are who they are and moms pushing them to be better, smarter, farther ahead than so and so's kid ends up being a bed of nails for everybody. We must do our OWN thing, at our OWN pace, in the way it works best for us and our own family. We can respect what other families are doing, but we must never get into a direct comparison line of thinking. Everyone's journey is different. Every child is different. Blessing to you!
