Learning Styles

Whether typical or special needs, and whether you homeschool or don't, it is always beneficial information to know just how your child learns in the best and most productive way.  While there are many official tests to acquire this information, a quick way to get a nice "snapshot" of how your child learns is through one of the many free online assessments available.

One of my favorites is the learning style test at Homeschool Views. This is a quick 15 question test and gives instant results telling you if your child falls more into the visual/auditory/or kinesthetic category(ies). A neat feature to this site is it also has a 26 question "your teaching style" assessment. Through your answers to these 26 questions, the results tell you if, based on your answers,  you lean more toward which of four teaching styles:
1. unschooling/child directed
2. combined parent/child directed
3. teacher directed
4. traditional

The site also gives a nice summary description of each of the four teaching styles as well as links to other great information.

I have a few different learning styles going on in my homeschool, but the main overlap is children who seem to learn best when multi-modalities are given, so we do alot of hands on, outside, science experimenting, learning. But come to think of it, that is how most of us learn the best...by reading, watching and actually doing.
Do you know your child's learning style? What is yours?

  1. What a great resource! I do not homeschool, but I know the importance of knowing your child's learning style. It makes all the difference when advocating for your child at school. I have used my observations about their learning styles to help choose teachers, structure reward/incentive systems, and explain homework. Thank you so much for giving me an added resource. I am going to go to the site you reference and see if my observations match up with my children's learning styles. Thank you for sharing and for linking up with NOBH! Smiles -
