Getting Organized and DIY Decorating in 2013

Last year, I had a great plan to organize my house. It didn't happen. Well, not exactly.

I DID organize my homeschool room and I did do a shared bedroom makeover for my two older daughters. So that is something.

Pin boards serves double duty as headboards

Labels make finding books on a bookshelf
in the Brighton Park homeschool room a breeze...

But two rooms does not a whole house make...

It is happening in 2013.

Definitely happening. So, alot of my reasons for wanting to organize have remained the same as last year when I decided "this is the year". (Alas, 2012 was not the year. But I have a good feeling about 2013.)

Especially since I have decided I am not just organizing this year...

I am redecorating. And I am excited about this because...

I am not just redecorating, I am DIY redecorating. I am dusting off my tools, seeking inspiration and looking forward to letting go of anything that does not bring me inspiration, does not have function, or that which does not serve me.

Minimalism and Redecorating in one. Now we're talking...

Let's revisit...

As I have written before, I like to consider myself an organized person. At heart, I  know I am an organized person (My closet IS organized by sleeve length and color, from dark to light), and I LOVE it when everything is in its place and clutter free. However, my house is currently not organized, (not even in the same vicinity as "organized") and I can attribute this to the following factors:
  • when we moved into this house, I never got to organize initially the way I wanted, because baby Brooke was born a mere 2 weeks after we moved in.
  • I went back to Graduate School (currently in my 3rd semester of getting a new Master's in History) and
  • Right now, I'm also in class about 40 hours a month getting my yoga teacher training certification
  • I am hopelessly outnumbered by children, who seem to not share my love of minimalism...
  • There are only so many hours in a day and what "gives" on a day where there is not enough time is usually the house.
So, this is my year to get organized. There are alot of reasons to get organized. These are mine (yours may be different):
  • I am a minimalist at heart, so clutter free spaces and clear counter tops for me are a necessity to my mental well being.
  • I want to set the example to the kids of a home that is well taken care of (not chaotic), which is particularly important since their home doubles as their school.
  • Less time looking for things and no money spent on buying duplicates of items we already have.
  • Weekly maintenance/cleaning takes less time when there is no clutter.
These are MY challenges to staying organized. (Yours may be different):
  • homeschool books, supplies and projects
  • My husband (while I am a minimalist, he is a "keeper"...wants to keep everything and his "system" of keeping everything is "piles").
  • lack of time; between homeschool, graduate school and kids' activities, almost every hour of every day is taken by an activity that is a bigger priority than cleaning closets or drawers.
  • my constantly growing book collection; apparently, I am hoarding cookbooks for the zombie apocalypse...
  • craft books, supplies and projects
So, I am making 2013--for real this year--the year I get my house really organized--for keeps. To apply minimalism and organization to each room down to the closet and drawers, so that I wake up each day in a clean and clutter free environment (read: not lose my sanity half way through a semester or a tax season or a homeschool lesson). And to rethink, and refresh the decor and aesthetic of my home to turn each room into an inspired space.

An inspired space. (The very thought of this makes my heart smile).

So here is my challenge to you: If you have been saying "I need to organize my homeschool" or "I really need to organize the _____ room" (or the whole house), or if any of these sound like resolutions for 2012 you plan to make, then join me! If you are wanting to simplify, then may I suggest the following amazing blogs to get you started:

Be more with Less
The Joy of Less
Zen Habits

So, my challenge to you. Ask yourself:
  • am I organized? is my home?
  • If yes (I am so jealous), if not, make your own list of what you think is keeping you from being organized
  • make a list of positive reasons/benefits of having an organized space.
  • make a list of the areas you want to revamp. My list is small~~ "whole house". What's yours?
I have already started organizing...turning this clutter collecting corner of our kitchen counter this week from this...

to this...

As I work on organizing other areas, and as I delve into some DIY decorating,  I will share before and after pictures. As far as our redecorating, Mr. Darcy and I have decided our biggest project is going to be converting our not often used formal dining room into a music room (That is going to be awesome). We are also giving two of our bathrooms an "update" and I am excited to try my hand at some DIY tasks I have never tried before.  (You will also notice a few changes to the blog in the upcoming weeks as I also organize here a bit too!)

I hope you will join me!

So, do you have a goal to organize or DIY this coming year? Leave a comment and share your plans!

This post is linked up to these lovely parties...

  3. My house was organized until 4 weeks ago. Some idiot decided to drive with out a driver's license and drove his car into the front end of my van. We were extremely lucky and the worst injury for the children and I were a few broken bones. Mine was a broken ankle though so I haven't been able to put weight on it. We had family staying with us to help for 3 weeks, but they just didn't know where to put the stuff that well wishers brought to us.

Once I am able to put weight on my ankle again and can walk (2-4 weeks)I'm going to work on organizing my house again. I'll probably start packing as I organize too because we're moving at the end of March to a house in town where I won't have to drive down the road our horrible accident was on every day anymore.

  4. Our shirt system seems almost exactly the same! Good luck on your journey :) My current goal is to try and rid the house of as much plastic as possible and find alternatives as money permits.

  5. Oh, it would take MUCH LONGER than 3 weeks to get my house decluttered and organized! ;)

  6. Katie, I LOVE your org post! I spent all day yesterday organizing...seems like the homeschool books multiply faster than we consume them! My biggest challenge...is money. Storage containers and cute little boxes cost money. I have considered cereal boxes, but we don't eat cereal...and cardboard attracts roaches. I do keep my eyes open for sales...but, just hate spending money on some thing! Hmmm...something to think about.

  8. Amy, I am so sorry to read about your accident but glad that it was not worse! Moving is a great time to purge and reorganize. We got rid of alot (not enough) stuff when we moved in 2010. I love it when you get to start new with organizing and a move is the perfect time to do that! Please keep me posted on how your ankle is and how the move goes. Blessings to you that your ankle heals quickly!

  9. Minimalist Mommi! I know! my husband teases me about my side of the closet but I like having "a place for everything and everything in its place". decreasing plastic is such a good goal! i buy food items in glass when i can as it is 100% recyclable and renewable while plastic isnt. small changes within each family make for big changes in the world we leave our children one day! thanks for stopping by! always nice to see you, my fellow AZ friend!

  10. Rebecca, isnt it CRAZY how homeschool materials multiply and take over spaces (like the kitchen table/counter! yikes!) I am definitely working on a better system. and trying harder to find more free resources via the web so i am not always buying books! also, we started utilizing the library card and that really cut down on needing storage for books i WAS buying at Barnes and NOble but now am getting free through the library! thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoy this series on organizing the home! 11. My plan for January is the whole house, too! I've been doing my yearly decluttering and have a few more areas to work through. However, as I've walked through the house putting things away, I've realized that I need to work on systems and organization. For example, the kids keep dumping their books on cd all over their bedrooms. The current system, whatever it is, just isn't working.

  12. Katie! I'm not a minimalist, but I like the idea of doing with less "stuff" and in the past few months have decluttered our bedroom, the loungeroom, and the dining/homeschooling area. I also like the idea of "one in, one out" - so after Christmas is a good time to take stock of the accumulations!

On my list to tackle this holidays is the kitchen (ours is tiny, so messy) and the biggie...our shed, which has become the repository for all manner of accumulated junk! It would be good to do some "before and afters," - great idea!

  13. Oh does this resonate with me! I finished the pantry and the children's rooms before Christmas. Now it's just the kitchen and our room to go. Of course, they are the worst! Thanks for the encouragement! (And for linking up with NOBH!) Smiles -

  21. Katie ~

I can relate to clutter free space enhancing my mental health. ;D I can also relate to being outnumbered by the children...8 to 1. I look around and there is ALWAYS something needing to be done or revised or re-organized...that goes with the territory of having a home that serves MANY purposes. :D I love using my labeler, making to-do list AND checking them off {keeps me accountable and on track} and utlizing bins/baskets to give everything a place. Looking forward to seeing all your DIY projects in the year ahead.

    Blessings ~

  23. Hello Katie
I recently shared on my blog how I have managed to find a simple, totally do-able, and affordable way to organize our homeschool space. The post is way too long and overly detailed, but I know there are so many of us mamas who are struggling in this area. Please check it out and perhaps something will work for you that has worked well for me. http://ow.ly/h6XXa
Also-- your twins are absolutely precious...I read some of your story with them, and having taught special needs kiddos for almost 10 years in public school before being home with my crew, I gotta say, I would have loved to have had those guys in my class. :)
    Warmest blessings, Joanna
