My one daughter, likes to dress for chicken-keeping...

We started raising backyard chickens two years ago. We currently have 10 hens (and 7 ducks and 6 turkeys). When the first eggs came everyone was so excited... you can read about that here. The chickens provide us with about 4 dz farm fresh eggs a week and have been a wonderful step on our journey to more sustainable living.

A colorful egg bowl of chicken, duck and turkey eggs...

One of the great things about blogging is the other nice bloggers (and chicken lovers) that you meet. My friend Diane has a very successful  facebook chicken page called The Lazy Chicken Coop. She is also an Etsy Shop owner and a fabulous seamstress.

Enter today's giveway for a chance to win one of her gorgeous aprons from her Etsy shop! AND a copy of the Pioneer Woman's new cookbook!

Ree Drummond's new cookbook offering has some great recipes to use up those eggs...I made both her cowboy and cowgirl quiches...they were delicious!

Cowgirl Quiche with prosciutto and leeks, going into the oven...

Our other family  favorites (so far) from the cookbook:  Breakfast Pizza, Chipotle Steak Salad, Pan Fried Spinach, Whiskey-Mustard Meatballs, and the Apple Dumplings.

Seriously, I haven't cooked something out of here yet that Mr. Darcy and the kids haven't swooned over.
The giveaway will run now till Friday night June 1st at 11pm AZ time with a winner announced Saturday June 2nd! We use rafflecopter for all our giveaways. You must live in the continental United States to enter and win. This contest is not affiliated with facebook in anyway. The Homeschool Mother's Journal: May Adventures

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

In my life this week…I have been on a journey, my friends. But like all good journeys it has started and ended back at home. For two weeks I have been unplugged (and off blogland) and have returned recharged...inspired...better.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… I was on The Sociable Homeschooler Radio show this week and shared tips on everything from how to incorporate homesteading activities into your homeschool day to how to choose curriculums for children with special needs...Did you miss it? Here's the link! (my part starts at the 15min mark).

I'm working on...some great posts for you. I will be posting several times a week now through the rest of the summer...posts in the queue for this coming week: announcing our new giveaway, a Moroccan shrimp tacos recipe post (these are amazing!), and more!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…My daughter Charlotte and I just returned from a trip to Paris and Belgium. When we returned, Mr. Darcy picked us up at the airport with the other 4 children in tow and we went straight to Sedona for 4 days. Yesterday, we hosted our daughter's birthday party and got to see so many of our friends. It has been a busy but wonderful month! Here is Charlotte in Belgium. She was such a fun travel buddy.

My favorite thing this week was…Seeing all the happy faces in the car when Mr. Darcy and the kids picked me up at the airport. I dare say that Mr. Darcy had the biggest smile of all! (I am told that our 2 year old kept him monumentally busy while I was gone!)

What’s working/not working for us…Incorporating learning into our trips is one of my favorite things about homeschooling. In Sedona, we took the kids to the Sedona History Museum and then the next day we all went and visited Montezuma's Castle. It was a wonderful day of learning, while seeing and exploring some of our beautiful state. Here we are standing in front of the ruins. I guess 3 out of 5 kids looking at the camera is not too bad...

I'm grateful for...I got an A in my History class this spring (and an A on my final paper!). I worked harder in that class than any class I have ever taken..so I guess you could say I am grateful the semester is over!

I’m reading…Textbooks, again. Alas, just started my summer class~~a 4wk undergrad history class that I still needed.

I’m cooking…I love cooking, do you? We made fried rice, dumplings, and spring rolls for the Chinese party yesterday. Made homemade pulled pork fajitas, have bbq ribs and some great salads in the queue to make this week! Here is the cake I made yesterday for my daughter's Chinese themed birthday party...

A photo, link or quote  to share… I will also be posting a few times a week on my sister blog, Katie's Language Cafe. We haven't posted over there since the last giveaway, but starting this week there will be at least 2 posts a week there and we would love to have you join us there as well...learn some French, and share our adventures!

Have a blessed week. I'm so excited about all I have to share with you on both blogs this coming week! This post is linked up to the Homeschool Mother's Journal link up, now hosted by  iHomeschool Network.

A Peaceful Week...

Zorro, one of our new baby turkeys

Mr. Darcy is taking care of all the animals while I am away this week. Typically (when it is not tax season), we go out each morning to the flock (we have chickens, ducks and turkeys) and to the garden and do the morning chores together. I love that. Are the homestead chores shared at your house, or does just one person do them? Do you take turns or do them together?

I look forward to reading your blog comments when I get back, but for now, I am thankful for a completely unplugged week...no blog, no facebook, no internet.  In the same way that I love our homesteading lifestyle, I love those times that are just for family without the intrusion of technology. They help us to reset and recharge, and are important for our thoughts, minds and hearts.

I wish you a peaceful week!

A Week of Joys...

In my life this week…I made it!
I wrapped up the spring semester and in doing so, finished my first year back in graduate school. For those of you new here, I am  a speech-path, but last August I started working on a second masters in History (part-time) with a concentration in French. I had both oral and written comprehensive finals this past week and had a paper due. It was a busy, stressful week and I am glad to put it behind me. I'm taking one class this summer and have signed up for 2 classes (so far) for this fall.

In our homeschool this week...we keep plugging away!
We took Monday off (my finals day) and then did extra work the other days. Audrey wrapped up another subject and the kids will be on  a short "spring break" from now until the 24th. Then we will start back and homeschool through  to the end of July.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share...discover nature daily!
Get your kids outside each day, no matter the weather!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing...the city of lights!
Today, I am heading back to France for  8 days. I am so excited to go back. This trip, I am being accompanied by my 5 year old daughter, Charlotte, who is very excited about her first trip abroad. While my last trip I stayed mainly in Paris proper, this trip is longer and so I am looking forward to also doing some day trips into the French countryside.

My favorite thing this week was…Joy!
Finishing finals. And yesterday, I was interviewed over the phone by an author in New Jersey who is writing a book about Jane Austen fans. The interview was fun and it will be neat to see if she uses my profile in the final draft. But the best thing was Baby Brooke turned to and we had her family party and she was so excited. I can't believe she is two already. What a joy she is!

What’s working/not working for us...participating parents!
What's working for us is that I am so lucky to have a husband that  enjoys doing his part in the child-rearing and is an active participant...something I do not take for granted! While I am gone this week with Charlotte, Mr. Darcy will be staying with the other 4 children. On their agenda this week: a birthday party, a train show and an Irish dance competition. I am thankful for a man who enjoys being a father and sees no problem with heading out to activities, without me, with 4 children in tow.

Things I’m working on...clutter busting!
As soon as I get home, the house is getting a spring clean! I am going to reclaim my dining room table! This semester it has slowly become a "catch all" for a myriad of things. I hate that! It's time to get back to my minimalist roots and get my house ready for summer! We are hosting a party here the 26th so that will be good motivation to get everything done before the end of the month...clutter you are going down!

I’m reading...a book that is not a history book finally!
"I love dirt: 52 activities to help you & your kids discover the wonders of nature" by Jennifer Ward

I’m grateful for...my kids and my mum!
This Mother's Day weekend, I am so grateful for the opportunity for being a mother. I am so thankful for my children and the time I get to spend with them each day through the gift of homeschooling, and I am so grateful for my own mother.

I’m praying fo...(and your prayers are welcome!)
safe travels for my daughter and I this trip.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share..."It's my party day!"
Baby Brooke turned two this past week (I guess we need to stop calling her Baby Brooke...). She helped make her own cupcake tower. Look at this happy face. Her joy is my joy. Motherhood is full of such joys!

Wishing you all a blessed Mother's Day! This post is hooked up to the Homeschool Mother's Journal link up which is now being hosted at ihomeschoolnetwork.

Waldorf Wednesday: Ceramic Tile Rubbing Craft

Pin It A few weeks ago, Mr. Darcy and I spent the weekend in Santa Barbara. One of the places that we visited was the Old Mission. This is a great craft idea I got from there that I wanted to share with you.

Skill level: Easy...older ones will enjoy it and little ones can do it making it a wonderful craft for families with children of different ages
Time involved: Easy
Materials: ceremic tile (any from Home Depot/Lowes/Target etc will do), crayons or chalk, white paper
**Special Needs Adaptation: This craft can be done using the larger sized or block shaped crayons. If you want to make it more challenging, for more of an OT/Fine Motor workout, use broken crayons, little pieces.

Place the tile on a firm surface. If your table is super nice, put a table cloth or placemat under the tile so that if the tile slips it doesn't scratch the surface below.  Ceramic tiles like these are found in almost any home improvement store. Our Home Depot and Lowe's both sell them here (lots of peppers, cactuses, suns and kokopelli) for approx. $5.00 each. This one is designed to look like the Old Mission.

Have your child place their white paper over the tile.

Rub over the paper with a horizontal crayon until the tile image appears on the paper.

This is just a simple craft, but it lends itself to teaching the art concepts of rubbings (you can also use chalk) and relief images. Sometimes, I find that my children enjoy the simple crafts as much as ones that I put hours of prep into. For another post on the joy of simple crafts (and a few examples), check out this blog post. This post is linked up to Friday's Nature Table at The Magic Onions, What are little boys made of at Seven Thirty Three , Link & Learn at No Time for Flashcards, and the Preschool Corner at Homeschool Creations.

Blessings,

Tutorial: How to make your own blog button

Did you know that if your blog does not have a button, you are missing out on alot of opportunities  that can grow your blog, for free?

If your blog has a button, does it have the five features for success?

Did you know it is easy to make your own temporary buttons that keep your giveaways on your blog front and center during their duration, by linking up a photo in your sidebar (that can be centered) with the direct post where people can enter your giveaway? Making your giveaway easy for people to find and enter while you still add great content and posts?
Why does your blog need a button:
1. Brand recognition
This is important if you are wanting to grow your blog. Your brand is what your blog is about. The blog name, design, tagline and button all contribute to your blog's brand recognition.

2.  Link Ups
If you hold link ups, having a link up button is a great way to have participants advertise your link up or site

3. Growing your Blog
If you want to purchase advertising on another blog, you will need a button for them to display in their sidebar

4. People want to share things they love
Having a button (along with a code they can copy and paste) makes it easier for them to post your blog button on their blog to share with their readership. A good blogger knows that being able to provide their readers sources for great information is just as important as providing that information. A good blogger is a generous blogger. A blog button allows people to be generous with their readers by sharing the information on your blog.
A good blog button has 5 features:
  1. Is sized 125 x 125 (or very close too), the standard size for all blog advertising sidebars
  2. Includes the name of your blog (or etsy shop)
  3. Stands out in a good way
  4. Evokes the mood, idea or aesthetic of what your blog is about.
  5. Evokes curiosity or a desire to learn more by clicking it to see where it takes you.
To make your own blog button, you need 4 things:

1. An account on a photo hosting service, such as photobucket. The accounts are free. You must have this set up first.
2. The photo or image/graphic you want to use, that you have permission to use, downloaded on your pc.
3. A blog, etsy shop or website to link the button to. (or blogpost, if you are linking a giveaway)
4. follow these easy instructions (Yes, you can do this. Just take it one step at a time).

Here's the how to:

1. Sign in to photobucket
2. Upload your image from your computer. After you upload it, you may need to use their editing features to either CROP the image (if you are using your own photo) or resize the graphic you have chosen to be the desired 125 x 125 size.
3. Save a copy of this image to an album and name it.
4. Go to view album.

So far so good.

Now find your newly uploaded and edited image in your album. See it? OK.
5. When you roll your cursor over the image in the album a box menu comes up directly under it. The third line down is HTML click on and copy the full code in that box. It will look something like this:

<a href="http://s1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/?action=view&amp;current=KatieGrabButton_New.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

You need to change this code to direct the button to the URL (blog, blogpost or etsy shop address) you want it to go to. Currently, it is directing to Photobucket. Let's say you want to direct it to your blog. (We will use Brighton Park's URL for the example)...

Here is our code from before:
<a href="http://s1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/?action=view&amp;current=KatieGrabButton_New.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I have highlighted all the code between the first set of "  " in yellow. We need to delete this code between the first set of quotations and replace it with where want to go by cutting and pasting what we want. So if I want the button to take people to my blog,
http://www.brightonparkblog.blogspot.com  I will put that URL address between those first quotations and it will now look like this: (you would use your own blog address).

<a href="http://www.brightonparkblog.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

To make the little box that has the code show (so that readers can take the code and copy and paste it on to your blog, we need to do one more step.

We need to add one more thing to your code before adding it to your blog. Here is mine. To make it yours:

Replace the highlighted area in yellow with your blogs URL.
Replace the highlighted area in pink with the location of your photo on photobucket. To find this, go to your photo in photobucket and hover over. Instead of HTML, copy and cut the code beside  "DIRECT LINK" .

<form><textarea rows="5" cols="20" readonly="readonly"> <center><a href="http://brightonparkblog.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket" /></a> </center></textarea></form></center>

When you put these together, it looks like this:

<center><a href="http://brightonparkblog.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket" /></a>
<form><textarea rows="5" cols="20" readonly="readonly"> <center><a href="http://brightonparkblog.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/homeschoolfam/KatieGrabButton_New.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket" /></a> </center></textarea></form></center>

To center your button, add <center> to the front of the code (where I highlighted in green) . (The program will add it to the end).
Now... lets put this code on your blog...
6. In a new window, sign into your blog. Click on
~Design at the top upper right, then
~Layout (in the new menu that was brought up on the left hand side) then click
~Add a Gadget. This brings up the Gadget menu. scroll down until you see
~HTML/JavaScript

In the new box that comes up, paste in the code.

Click save.

Your new button is on your blog.

To make a button for a giveaway, the only difference is you are linking to a direct post URL, not your blog's main URL. To find a posts direct URL, go to that post and click on its TITLE. The specific blog post URL will now be in the URL window. Click and copy the whole thing. That whole thing is what you will paste in between those first quotation marks. Also, you will NOT do step two to make the code show up, as you only want the linked graphic on your sidebar, so making a button linked to a giveaway post only takes 1/2 the steps.

When you add both the button graphic and the code box  to your sidebar, it looks like this...a button at the top with a code box below, making it easy for people to take your blog button with them!

Photobucket

**My current blog button was designed by Little Bitty Blog Designs. She designed my header and I wanted them to match. This helps with my blogs brand recognition and the code box belows allows readers to take my button with them.
Sometimes, we have the know how to do something, but not the time. If you would like me to make a button for you, I am offering the following services (beginning June 1st):

Giveaway Button (installed): $2.50
Put a giveaway button on the top of you blogs sidebar, linked to the specific giveaway post. You supply the graphic/photo (usually is a giveaway graphic or a picture of the prize.)

Blog Button or Etsy Store Button (installed): $10.00/$15.00
Make a blog button with code box if desired for your blog's sidebar, linked to your blog or etsy shops home page.  You supply photo/graphic ($10). I supply photo/graphic ($15).

Let me know if you have any questions or if you need a button!

A Sneak Peek of something special...

Pin It A few weeks ago, my two eldest daughters were asked to be a part of a photo shoot for a very special project being put together by two very talented ladies, Nicole from Tikkido and Paula from Frog Prince Paperie!  You may have seen a few of the photos on my Magical Memes post...and a few of the others,  now grace my new summer blog header (these were all taken by the talented Nicole).

Nicole, who can be found at Tikkido and Tradewind Tiaras  and Paula from Frog Prince Paperie are getting ready to launch something very exciting, a new Magazine called Festivities, which showcases their party planning prowess and gives readers amazing party ideas and photos while also offering easy party ideas to replicate for ourselves.

Here is a sneak peek from the photo shoot of the "BLUSH" party that my girls attended a few weeks ago.  I for one cannot wait to see their new e-zine. They are both amazing party planners, wonderful DIY'ers and have great ideas for everyone, even those who are craft-challenged. I am always impressed how they use simple, easy to do touches to make dramatic effect.

If the gorgeous photos of this Blush party are any indication, then we are in for a real treat!

Learning Styles

IMG_0994 by lacybekah, on Pix-O-Sphere

Whether typical or special needs, and whether you homeschool or don't, it is always beneficial information to know just how your child learns in the best and most productive way.  While there are many official tests to acquire this information, a quick way to get a nice "snapshot" of how your child learns is through one of the many free online assessments available.

One of my favorites is the learning style test at Homeschool Views. This is a quick 15 question test and gives instant results telling you if your child falls more into the visual/auditory/or kinesthetic category(ies). A neat feature to this site is it also has a 26 question "your teaching style" assessment. Through your answers to these 26 questions, the results tell you if, based on your answers,  you lean more toward which of four teaching styles:
1. unschooling/child directed
2. combined parent/child directed
3. teacher directed
4. traditional

The site also gives a nice summary description of each of the four teaching styles as well as links to other great information.

I have a few different learning styles going on in my homeschool, but the main overlap is children who seem to learn best when multi-modalities are given, so we do alot of hands on, outside, science experimenting, learning. But come to think of it, that is how most of us learn the best...by reading, watching and actually doing.
Do you know your child's learning style? What is yours?

California Adventure

Pin It  California holds a special place in my heart. I lived there from 1997 to 2002, holding residence in both the Northern end of the state, near the Oregon border, and also in Los Angeles while I worked as a Speech Pathologist at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.  It is where I was living when I met Mr. Darcy, where we courted, and though we didn't get married there (we were married in Scotland), we were living there still when we had the twins.  Having spent the several years before that living in Florida, it is safe to say I have an affinity for beaches which makes my love of the Arizona landscape all the more baffling.

This past weekend, Mr. Darcy and I enjoyed a getaway back to California. We try to get there once a year; sometimes with children and sometimes alone such as this past weekend. This particular trip, we started in Los Angeles, then headed up to UCSanta Barbara (alumni weekend~~Mr. Darcy is class of 1995) and ending North of Santa Barbara in the Danish community of Solvang and further North into wine country. For this mother of 5 under the age of 11 and with finals weeks approaching (blech.), it was a much needed respite.

Windmill at Solvang                                                 Catholic Church, Santa Barbara
I feel fortunate that our current life in AZ is close enough that we are able to get back to visit California. I love taking the kids to the beach and no matter how many times I go there, there is always something new to explore. For a girl like me who loves all things outdoors from camping to rockclimbing, It is one of my favorite destinations to go as a couple and as a  family and since we were able to scout a few family campgrounds while there this time, our California family adventures are sure to continue.

What adventures do you have planned for this summer ?  Are you longing for beaches? Dessert vistas? Or something in between?
Leave your answer in the comments and wishing you a summer full of Happy Adventures :-)

About a year ago I added a facebook page to go with the Brighton Park blog.

On the facebook page you'll find: more DIY links and tutorials, more pictures, more homeschool resources, more fellowship and, M-F,  the Daily SALT (Speech and Language Tip).

Think of the possibilities...

If you have any trouble using the rafflecopter entry, you can email me at homeschoolfam.com (don't dislike it just because it's new ;-) **If you are not seeing the rafflecopter entry box at the end of the post, refresh your screen or click on the little gray "read more" box in the lower left at the end of this post (by the other posts recommendations) and that will bring it up for you!)

This contest will end on Sunday, May 6th, 2012,midnight, AZ time. WINNER MUST LIVE IN THE CONTINENTAL USA.  The only mandatory entry is to leave a comment on this blog post telling me, are you a homeschooler, a homemaker, a homeschooler or a combination of the three.
